Ian Smith first started working with Broughton Ales in 1981 as a part-time brewer worker/drayman. He received his first full-time position in 1983 as the original brewer’s (Frank Smith) associate. He and Frank Smith worked together for a number of years to grow the famous brands such as the Greenmantle Ale, Old Jock Ale, Merlin’s Ale and the Scottish Oatmeal Stout. As the brewer grew, so did Ian’s role. Ian took on more responsibility as a foreman overseeing brewing, production planning and coordinating of all logistics.

One of Ian’s major focuses over the years has been the cleaning procedures and processes in the production plant. “One of the hardest parts of brewing is maintaining quality and consistency of the beer. By having robust and consistent cleaning procedures, you can rest a bit easier at night.” In addition to cleaning, Ian oversees all production planning, scheduling, hop/malt/ingredients purchasing, new product development, packaging material and organising all logistics.

Ian has been dedicated to Broughton Ales for 34 years and he is one of the major drivers of the business. With a wealth of experience in production, brewing, planning and management, he is a cornerstone to the success of Broughton’s business and tasty beer!
